“Design Methods” and other work
How did the field of strategic design get started?
What’s design’s role as projects become more complicated?
What’s design’s role when the technological aspects of a project are more complicated?
Written by one of the founders of the Design Research Society, this book is from the 70s but it’s incredibly relevant to the relationship between design and technology. His whole thesis is that designers can’t be black boxes of creativity, where something magic happens between input and output. The why behind that thesis is that increasingly complex technology, and with that increasingly specialized technical knowledge is required to transform the present state into some future state. This means that design isn’t a decorative step at the end of technical fabrication. Sounds familiar? Design thinkers of the 90s didn’t come up with this thesis, but they were great at translating it into actionable, SOW friendly terms.
